NEW YORK

The city

New York City, officially the City of New York, is one of the biggest cities in the USA. The important role in media, education, entertainment, art, fashion, publicity and of course in the economy makes New York one of the most important cities of the world. It’s a really special city to be in. You will find a lot of different cultures and people in the city. New York is the place to be!

Peter Minuit bought the city from the Indians in 1614. He named the city New- Amsterdam. This was a trading post of the Netherlands. It were the British that took over the city in 1664 and New York was the capital city of the US through 1783 to 1790.
If you are interested in the history of your ancestors you can look in the registers on Ellis Island. Maybe you’ll find your last name in the register. Ellis Island was the place where all the European immigrants  arrived. They were hoping for a better life in the land of opportunities, the United States of America. You can imagine that there are a lot of European influences in New York. There is an Italian neighborhood, Dutch influences and of course the Irish parade of St. Patrick’s Day.
On Ellis Island arrived about 12 million immigrants out of Europe.

Now a days there are 5  big districts in the city.

The Bronx: Actually this is the birthplace of the rap and hiphop culture  and you will find the Yankee Stadium in this district.

Brooklyn: This district has the biggest population and is the only district outside of Manhattan that really has a center. On the other side of Brooklyn there is a long coastline with a lot of beaches and the famous Coney Island, one of the theme parks in the region.

Manhattan: This district has the highest population density and is known for the financial center, the skyscrapers and the big Central Park but also the offices of multinational companies. Besides that there are a lot of universities, museums and some other special places like Broadway and Madison Square Garden. Manhattan has 3 districts of his own, Lower, Midtown and Upper Manhattan.

Queens: Originally Queens was not a district but Queens consisted out of 5 small towns. These towns were founded by the Dutch. Queens has the biggest diversity of ethnicity. There are also 2 big airports in Queens: LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Staten Island: Staten Island is connected to Brooklyn by the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and with Manhattan by the free Staten Island Ferry. This is also one of the most popular tourist attractions.
